What Is 240 GSM Cotton? Why GSM Matters When Buying a T-Shirt

What Is 240 GSM Cotton? Why GSM Matters When Buying a T-Shirt

When buying a T-shirt, you probably notice things like the colour, design, fit and size first.

But there is another detail that can tell you a lot about how a T-shirt feels: GSM.

If you've seen Pixalflux products, you may have noticed that many of our oversized T-shirts are made using 240 GSM 100% cotton.

So what does 240 GSM actually mean? And is a higher GSM always better?

Let's break it down.

What Does GSM Mean?

GSM stands for grams per square metre.

Simply put, it tells you how much one square metre of fabric weighs.

A lower GSM generally means a lighter fabric, while a higher GSM usually means a heavier and more substantial fabric.

For example, a lightweight summer T-shirt might have a much lower GSM, while a heavyweight oversized streetwear T-shirt can have a much higher GSM.

But GSM isn't a quality score.

A higher number doesn't automatically mean a better T-shirt. The type of cotton, construction, finishing, fit and overall manufacturing quality also matter.

So, What Is 240 GSM?

A 240 GSM T-shirt uses a relatively heavyweight fabric compared with the lightweight T-shirts you commonly find.

This gives the fabric more structure and a more substantial feel.

That's one of the reasons we chose 240 GSM for our heavyweight oversized T-shirts at Pixalflux.

We wanted our tees to feel like proper streetwear pieces rather than very thin everyday T-shirts.

Why Does Fabric Weight Matter?

The fabric weight can change the way a T-shirt feels and sits on your body.

A heavier fabric can offer:

More structure

The T-shirt tends to hold its shape better instead of feeling very loose or flimsy.

A more premium feel

A substantial fabric can feel different in your hands and when you wear it.

Better suited to oversized fits

Heavyweight fabric works particularly well with oversized and drop-shoulder silhouettes because it helps the shape of the T-shirt stand out.

A different drape

The way a heavier fabric falls around the body can give an oversized T-shirt a more defined streetwear look.

Is 240 GSM Good for Indian Weather?

This is where personal preference matters.

A 240 GSM T-shirt is heavier than a lightweight cotton tee, so it may feel warmer in very hot weather.

However, the fabric composition, weave, fit and breathability also make a difference.

At Pixalflux, we use 100% cotton for our T-shirts because we wanted to balance the heavyweight feel with everyday comfort.

For people who specifically like heavyweight streetwear, 240 GSM can be a great middle ground between a lightweight basic tee and an extremely heavy garment.

240 GSM vs Lightweight T-Shirts

The easiest way to understand the difference is to think about how the fabric feels.

A lightweight T-shirt usually feels thinner, lighter and more relaxed.

A 240 GSM T-shirt feels more substantial and structured.

Neither is automatically better.

It depends on what you want from your T-shirt.

If you prefer very light fabrics, a lower GSM may suit you better.

If you like oversized streetwear with more structure and a heavier feel, 240 GSM can be a great choice.

Why Pixalflux Uses 100% Cotton

GSM was only one part of the decision when we were developing our T-shirts.

We also wanted the fabric to be 100% cotton.

For us, the combination of cotton and a heavyweight construction gives our oversized tees the kind of feel we were looking for when we started Pixalflux.

The goal wasn't simply to put a graphic on a heavy T-shirt.

We wanted the actual T-shirt to feel good too.

Does Higher GSM Mean Better Quality?

Not necessarily.

This is one of the most common misconceptions about GSM.

A 300 GSM T-shirt isn't automatically better than a 200 GSM T-shirt.

Think of GSM as a measurement of fabric weight, not a rating of quality.

Two T-shirts can have the same GSM but feel completely different because of differences in cotton quality, yarn, construction, finishing and manufacturing.

So when choosing a T-shirt, don't look at GSM alone.

Look at the fabric, fit, construction, printing and overall quality.

Why We Chose 240 GSM for Pixalflux

When we were developing Pixalflux, we wanted our oversized T-shirts to have a proper streetwear feel.

After researching fabrics and trying different options, 240 GSM felt like the right direction for the heavyweight oversized styles we wanted to create.

It gives the tees structure without going to an extremely heavy fabric weight.

And most importantly, it feels like the kind of T-shirt we would actually want to wear ourselves.

Final Thoughts

GSM might sound like a technical clothing term, but it is actually pretty simple.

GSM tells you the weight of the fabric.

A higher GSM generally means a heavier fabric, while a lower GSM generally means a lighter one.

But heavier doesn't always mean better.

The right T-shirt comes down to what you prefer.

If you like 100% cotton, heavyweight fabric and an oversized streetwear fit, a 240 GSM T-shirt might be exactly what you're looking for.

That's the kind of T-shirt we wanted to create at Pixalflux.

Heavyweight feel.

Everyday comfort.

Your own style.
